LEAGUE FOOTBALL

ANNUAL MEETING. . QUESTION OF PLAYING GROUNDS. Tho annual meeting of the Wellington Rugby Football League was held at the Trades Hall last night. Mr P.* C. Elvans occupied tho chair. "A FIGHTER FOR GROUNDS." The chairman said that the meeting was the first since the war period. The coming year would probably mean tnat tho„ league would undergo a period of something resembling reformation. In tho new season they would probably have to fight the Rugby Union 'for playing grounds. It was regrettable tnat there should bo so much antipathy be. tween two kindred sports bodies. Such a condition of things was somewhat out rageous. They had to fight for grounds to play upon, and they would also have to endeavour to uphold their interests in other directions, but they would fight everything out in a true sporting spirit. Tho report and balance-sheet, details of which have already been published, were adopted. ELECTION OP OFFICERS. The ©lection of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr Q. H. Scales; viepresidents, .Messrs M. J. Bearden, J. O. Shorland, George Frost, C. H. Chapman, J. Glover, Nees, Mawson, O’Sullivan, J McDonald, IV. S. Brice, C. B. Norwood, selection committee, Messrs C. Murphy, Q. Bradley E. Buckland; secretary, Mr J. Murphy; treasurer, Mr H. Cranston ; delegate to League’s conference (Apn. 2nd), Mr F. C. Evans. Messrs W. Langridge, A. E. Dobson, and P. O’Oonnell were constituted a committee to formulate an insurance scheme, and bring down, a report to be considered at a later meeting. It was decided to call a meeting of referees with . the object of forming a referees’ association. The meeting passed a resolution congratulating the late secretary (Mr W. S. Brice) ’ upon his work during the past season, and. making him a life membo; of tho League. Mr Brice, in replying, said he thought the newly-elected secretary would carry out his duties in a highly satisfactory manner. Ho hoped the future of the League would ho a good one. Mr Brice referred to tho support the League had always had from local Labour men, who had always been willing to give their assistance iu connection with the, game. Tho Labour members of tho council had always taken a keen interest in the League, and their assistance could always be relied upon whenever-it was re. quired. In conclusion, Mr Brice offered the suggestion that a deputation should wait upon the reserves committee of tho City Council to press for playing grounds, .Messrs E. Duncan, _L. Smith, and H Cranston were appointed junior selectors.

The meeting agreed, to Mr Brice’s sug. gestion that a deputation wait upon tho City Council in regard to playing fields.
