SHOPS, SOAP AND CANDLE WORKS. In referring to the high price charged for meat, despite the fact that stores in New Zealand and ot Home ore full, Major Whyte, of Hamilton, expressed the opinion that the farmers should open up their own shops for the sale of the meat, and let the general public have it at reasonable price. This would tend to draw the farmer and tho working man closer together—a very desirable consummation, '(he farmers should also have their own woollen mills and soap and candle factories. Mr Ellicott wanted to know why the price of fat paid to farmers had not increased in view of tho Jargo increase in the price charged for candles, soap, etc. Soap and candles should be handled by the freezing works. The meeting (of the Farmers' Union) decided that the directors of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company be asked to start soap and candle works as soon as possible.
