POLO MATCHES
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. COMPLAINT ABOUT TREATMENT OF PONIES. FEB PEESS ASSOCIATION. NAPJJEjR., March 17. The final game in the Saville Polo (up was played at Hastings to-day. The weather remained hot and dusty. fctawke's Bay A. and Pareora (Canterbury) met in the final game. A very fast and open game resulted, Hawke's Bay 9, Pareora 1, the former thus taking, the cup. The score was not altogether an indication of the play, which was far from ohe'-sided, though Hawke's Bay had the advantage throughout. P. Ellworthy, for Pareora, was the scorer with a beautiful Jiit. The Hawke's Bay scores were from Lyons (3), W. MoKonzie (2), F. MoKenzie (3), and O. Kelson (1). The Pareora players complain bitterly about tho treatment of their-ponies in the latter part of the journey from Timaru to Hastings. The ponies left Timaru on Tuesday at noon of last week. They had a night in the stables at Christchurch, and took the boat from Lryttelton. Tho following day they transhipped hurriedly from Wellington to train, and it is alleged that the station master at Palmerston North refused to allow the horses to te removed from their trucks on Thursrday night. The players claim that this was cruelty to the animals, as they were improperly fed and in consequence of the long trip the ponies are leg wear and incapable of proper work. This morning a handicap game resulted:—Poverty Bay B (receive 12) scored 17 goals, v. Hawke'a Bay C (receive 29) scored 2 goals. Tho result therefore was: Poverty Bay 29 v. Hawke's Bay 31. The handicap matches oontinue to-morrow.
