BENZINE SUPPLIES
FAULTY CONTROL ALLEGED. Regarding benzine much indignation has been expressed in the South Auckland 1 district that tho conitro] of supplies has been taken out of tho hands of ithe Controller appointed some time ago by tho Government, and rested in a committee . One of the first actions taken by this committee was to cancel tho arrangement inaugurated by the controller, whereby bona-fide dairy farmers were given oil for their milking machines—one tin at a time—the dairy companies guaranteeing thait the spirits would be issued to genuine users only. In place of this, an allocation of only 250 oases was made for the whole "of the dairymen along the Waikato, King Country, and Rotorua lines. This is about one-sixth of the quantity required. The position is acute, and the dairy farmers are indignant. The dairy companies are conferring, with a view to united action, and the Prime Minister and the Board of Trade have been approached. PETROL AT £6 PER CASE. BOARD OF TRADE INVESTI- - GATES. Full investigation has been made by the Board of Trade in regard to the complaint that a Wellington resident had been charged by a Rotorua dealer £5 for a case of benzine. As the result of the inquiries, ifc appears that the seller was a Rotorua milk vendor, who possessed benzino merely for use in his own business. It was only under pressure that ho consented to sell a case to the purchaser, taking tho risk of not being a'blo to oibtain further supplies himself. It was reported to the board that thero was a great shortage of benzine in Rotorua at the time, and the purchaser could not obtain a supply elsewhere. Tho board is advised legally that as the seller is not a dealer in benzine tho case is not a suitable one for prosecution. The vendor, it may be said, was in the position of a man who, under pressure from the purchaser, speculated on his chance of replacing tho case.he sold, and perhaps having to pay a higher price than he obtained.
