A STATION ACCIDENT

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED AT TE A WAITE.

A most unfortunate and very painful apqideut occurred at 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday at Mr Riddiford’s station at To Avvaito, when a returned soldier named Corbell was so seriously injured as to necessitate his removal to the Wellington hospital. Corbell, who is employed on Mr, Riddiford’s station, was engaged in carting firewood to tho homestead. He was driving in from the bush,, and when about 400 yards from home the reins fell from his grasp. He. stopped the wagon, which was heavily laden with wood, and was in the act of bending down to pick up the reins, when the horses became restive, and moved off up ’a small hill. Corbell, in attempting to regain control of the reins, slipped and fell. By some means the horses over turned the wagon, and the full load completely buried the unfortunate man. He became unconscious, and remained unnoticed for over twenty minutes, when two cadets, on their way in from mustering, discovered Corbell, and made to the station for assistance. Corbell was extricated in a serious state, and was later moved into the station, whore he was attended to by Dr’Munro, of Martinborough. The Ripple, on her way from Napier to Wellington, was communicated with, and yesterday called in at Te Awaite, when the injured man was brought on to Wellington. On arrival shortly after 6 o’clock he was placed in the ambulance and quickly conveyed to the hospital, where he now lies in an unconscious and critical condition, suffering from a fractured spine. Corbell, who is a returned soldier, hails from Scotland, and has no relatives in New Zealand.
