CRIME’S PENALTIES
PRISONERS SENTENCED CHIEF JUSTICE DEALS WITH SEVERAL CASES, Charles Frederick Hodgson appeared in the Supreme Court yesterday to be sentenced by the Chief J ustice (Sir Robert Stout) on three charges of false pretences. His counsel (Air G. G. G. Watson) said that Hodgson had enlisted in Australia, gone to Now Guinea, returned to New Zealand. committed the offences, gone away with the N.Z.E.P., and had been arrested on his return. The military record should bo taken into account. His Honour sentenced the prisoner to six months' imprisonment and remarked that his record was a bad one. A SOUTH’S LAPSE.
- A youth, whose offence was the theft of oil blouses worth £B7, belonging to JMackay, Logan and Caldwell, Ltd., with whom he had been employed for four years, also appeared to be sentenced.
Mr - H. V. O’Leary, counsel for the prisoner, said that the only conclusion which could be arrived at was that influenza had unbalanced the boy’s mind. Noble had a good home, was in no need of money, yet took these goods and sold them. Strangely enough he returned the whole of the money, which had been refunded.
His Hououj placed the lad on probation for two years, and remarked that it was sad to see a boy with every advantage throw away his chances. SENT TO AVERAROA FARM.
George Williamson, a lad over sixteen years of age, was formally sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, but is to be transferred to the State Farm at Weraroa, on charges of false pretences at Talhape and Ohakune.
