TRANS-PACIFIC FARES
THE SUGGESTED CONFERENCE. CABINET AND XJ.S.S. COMPANY CONFERRING. "We had information-some time ago from the British Minister for Shipping," stated the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald {Acting-Postmaster-General) to a "Times" representative yesterday, -''that an increase of trans-Pacifio passenger fares was coming into operation. But contradictory reports have been receivod since, and wo are now conferring' With the"'"Union 1 Steam" Ship Company on the matter.. The . whole point is how the subsidies in connection with the trans-Pacific service will be aifected; and we want to find out exactly where we stand, as the subsidies are paid on condition that the passengers are carried at a certain rate. Whether the proposed increase ia justified or not is the matter under discussion between the Union Company and ourselves.'' *■ ■
