TRAMWAY SYSTEM
SHORTAGE OF MOTORMEN. At last nigkt’s meeting of the City Council, the tramways committee reported that, for some time past, it had been in communication with the Minister for Public Works with a view to obtaining the suspension of certain clauses in the Tramways Amendment Art, 1919, which stipulate a twelvemonths’ service qualification for conductors before they be promoted to motonnen. The Minister recently called a conference of representatives of tramway undertakings similarly affected, and had consulted the tramway unions on the matter. Up to the present, however, no reply had been received indicating that the Minister was taking any action with respect to same.
“The position is that this council, in common with other local authorities ( is faced, owing to circumstances arising out of the war, with a serious shortage of motonnen, ’’ added the committee.
