STATE MEAT SHOPS
SCHEME LAUNCHED IN AUCKLAND. The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, President of the Board of Trade, last night received tho following telegram from tho secretary of the Board of Trade at Auckland in connection with tho opening of tho two State butchers’ shops there yesterday: ‘‘First day s business at Government shops constitutes' record,, despite". ‘ adverse conditions and exceedingly hot day. The Kaleyards on Wednesday were evidently affected through the scheme. Beef prices were normal, but mutton prices were 2s to 3s less than last week’s rates. Eyerything is proceeding satisfactorily, but strong evidence is appparent generally that tho scheme should be extended/’
