TWENTY-FIVE CHARGES

THEFTS ABOUT WELLINGTON ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ARTHUR DOUGLAS. Twenty-five charges were laid against Arthur Douglas, wlio appeared m the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Air VV. G. Riddell, S.AX. There were twenty-two charges of breaking and entering and thett, two of breaking and entering with intent to commit theft, and one of tneft. All the cases with ono exception (at Napier) are alleged to have occurred in Wellington and its suburbs. Tha thefts for which Douglas was charged were mostly committed in the last few months of the old year. .following is the list of charges read against Douglas yesterday:—(T) On August 26th, 1913, did break and enter the dwelling of Howard James Jones, with intent to commit theft; (2) on September Bth, 1913, did break and. enter the dwelling of Frank William Bedford, Hataitai, and steal therefrom a brooch and charm, valued at 255; (3) on September Bth, 1913, broke and entered the residence of Joseph Charles Minifie and stole two watches, two chains, two links, greenstone heart, a ring, a bracelet, and other articles to a total value of £2B 10s: (4) theft of 10a from the residence of Thomas Noel Brodrick, in Salamanca road; (5) theft from the residence of Hugh Francis Lowe, of Lower Hutt, of property and money to the total value of £22; (6) theft from the residence of Abraham Berman (Wellington) of property and money to the total value of £34: (7) theft from the residence of Charles Douglas Morpeth of property valued at £6 8s; (8) theft frian the dwellinghouso of Richard Brown of money and property valued at £8 6s; (9) theft from the dwellinghouse of James McKee of property valued at £35 10s; (10) on October 2nd, at Napier, stole property and money valued at |£B 5s from the dwelling-house of James Berry, of Faraday street, Napier; (11) stole from the. residence of Joseph Stephen Rutter property valued at £2; (12) theft from the dwellinghouse of Harry Edgar Nichols of property valued at £2O; (13) theft from the dwellinghouse of Richard Morris Griffiths of property and money to the total value of £l7 3s 6d; (14) theft from the residence of Arthur Marshall (Lower Hutt) of property valued at 12s Cd; (15) breaking and entering the residence of Walter James Rogers, with intent to commit a crime; (16) theft from the dwellinghouse of. Elizabeth Maud Stent of property valued at £32 11s; (17) theft from the residence of John Lancelot Barlow- (Lower Hntt) of property and money to the value of £.2 12s. 6d; (18) theft from the residence of William George David Brown (Lower Hutt) of property valued at £11; (19) theft from the residence of William Fraser of property and money to the value of £l3; (20) theft from the residence of Arthur Hawthorne of a tie pin valued at £3; (21) theft from the residence of Walter Clements Hampton of property valued at £4; (22) theft from the residence of Maud Kain (Wellington) or jewellery and money to the total value of £62; (23) theft from the residence of George Pino of property valued at £l2; (21) theft from the dwelling of Charles Corden Larmour at property valued at £l4; (25) theft from the residence of Frederic John Evans of property and money to the total value of £lO Bs.

Maud Griffiths, Phillip Berry, Elizabeth Brown, Florence Morpeth, 'Winifred Lowe, Helen Brodrick, Leah Berman, Alice Catherine Minifie, Lilian Bedford, and Charlotte Annie Jones had, np to the time of the court’s adjournment, given evidence of a formal nature, mostly descriptive of the ransacking of their several houses and of the property stolen. The remaining cases were adjourned till Friday morning at 10 o’clock, His Worship warning those witnesses who had been subpoenaed and who had not vet given evidence, that they would be required at that hour.
