SWIMMING

THE THORNDON CLUB. The final of the 50yds handicap held under the auspices of the Thorndon Swimming Club was decided last evening. The preliminary heats were held on Tuesday night. Result: —H. W. Harris (12sec) 1, W. R. King (9sec) 2, S. Hudson (4sec) 3. Also competed— C. Davidson 9sec, W. O’Meara 6sec, T. Duffy 4sec, and S. Henrys 4seec. Time, 40sec. The race resulted in on© of the closest finishes ever seen at the baths. Harris won by a bare touch from King, with Hudson very close np third.

A specially-arranged 50yds ©vent was also decided, and resulted as under:—A. W. Smith (9sec) 1, J. Shearer (4sec) 2, G. Bruce (4sec) 3. Also competed—F. Roberts and K. Robertson ecr, K. Wiggins 2sec. A 100yds handicap is set down for decision this evening.

The Wellington Centre’s carnival will be held at the baths on Saturday afternoon. All the champions of New Zealand are taking part. The Canterbury Centre have entered three teams for the relay race, and the other centres on© team, so the public of Wellington will have an opportunity of seeing the flying squadron teams in action, which event is the blue ribbon of swimming.

The Canterbury swimmers have, according to latest advices, been showing great improvement, and it is expected that Atkinson, Poison, Hill, Jerred all will run Malcolm Champion, the Auckland champion, very close. The local swimmers engaged in the provincial championship, of 100 yards, are:—Duke Maarama, A. McCarClie, C V. Fordham, H. Little, F. Roberts, H. ajtier, and C. Levy. All are in good form, and a good race will be witnessed. The comic items are well selected. The Captain Cook . party of last year’s fame have promised to stage an item to excel their last efforts.
