REIGN OF TERROR MONARCHISTS ATTACK POLICE AND GUARDS. LONDON, October 21. Tho Portuguese telegraph wires are interrupted. A censored Reuter message from Lisbon states that the Monarchists attacked the police and tho Republican guards in attempts to release political prisoners at various points, and that over 100 arrests wore made. The Government claims to have stifled the revolt. PLOTS CONCOCTED BY CARBONAROS. (Received October 22, 10.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 22. Tho “Daily Express” correspondent in Lisbon states that a reign of terror continues, and a whispered word in a cafe is enough to consign a suspect to au underground cell. Posted letters are opened, and carbonaros are concocting plots against the Republic for the purpose of demolishing it, and then receiving liberal payment for tho results. DUE PUNISHMENT FOB RINGLEADERS. LISBON, October 23. Tho Government, in a circular to the Powers, states that tho Monarchists attempted a subversive movement, and, notwithstanding strong preparations, completely failed. The railway lino was cut and a number of telegraphs interrupted. Nobody connected with tho army or navy participated. The Government is acquainted with tho details of the conspiracy, and will mete duo punishment to the ringleaders. GOVERNMENT AWARE OF PLOT. (Received October 23, 9.15 p.m.) LISBON, October 22. Groups of armed men appeared at various centres at night timo and conflicts ensued. Tho Government was aware of the plot, and was able to disperse and arrest the ringleaders and restore order. Tho rebels destroyed two bridges. SUPPRESSION EASY. ALL CONSPIRATORS ARRESTED. (Received October 22, 11.35 p.m.) LISBON, October 22. The rising was fixed for 3 o’clock in the morning. Armed parties assembled in the neighbourhood of the barracks, and one attempted to scale the walls of the Military School and obtain arms, but was frustrated. The revolt was directed by two committees, one civil and one military. The signal for a general outbreak was to be tho murder of Ministers and officials, whereupon three columns organised in the suburbs were to take simultaneous action. Meanwhile, Captain Continho, a French refugee, was waiting on the frontier. Ho had deposited arms in various parts of tho country preparatory to simultaneous risings there. The Government’s fore-knowledge made the suppression easy. The police broke into a meeting fn an embroidery workshop, and after a sharp struggle arrested all tho conspirators, who were arranging to rescue prisoners from the civil prison. LONDON. October 22. Reuter’s Lisbon correspondent states that several of those arrested are of high social position, including army and navy officers. Chief Quartermaster Quimaraes committed suicide with a revolver when arrested. Tho Monarchist leaders, including Senhor Moreira and Senhor Almeida, fled.
