Tho following motion , was carried at a conference of tho Railway Officers’ Institute tb-day : “ That members of the service should be allowed to retire after having served thirty years and still continue payments to tho superannuation fund until such time as they complete the period of time fixed by the present Act, when they should ba allowed to go on the fund in the ordi-l nary way; that a similar benefit should be .extended to members dismissed for technical fault after having served thirty years.” ■ * GONE BACK WITHOUT POLICE ESCORT. AUCKLAND, August 2. Willjam Greenland, secretary of the Fiji Fruit Company, who was arrested on board the Zealandia on Wednesday morning on a charge of having stolen £36 of his firm’s money, was brought before the magistrate this morning and discharged. ' The police received directions from Fiji advising that defendant should be permitted to return by the Makura without police escort. He and Mrs Greenland left for Suva by the Makura to-night. SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS. INVERCARGILL, August 2. At a meeting of the Southland Education Board to-day a motion was passed calling tho attention of the department to the inadequacy of the present facilities for training teachers in tho Southland district. ,It was decided to consult tho department as to the probability of meeting the difficulty by the importation of teachers. If tho department is unfavourable to importation it will be requested to assist financially in the establishment of two model schools in the district. The chairman (Mr_ D._ Gilchrist) said it was not worth while importing incompetent teachers, and it was not likely that competent teachers arriving in the country would submit to being sent to the backblocks.
