WIDOWS AND ORPHANS

ASSISTANCE EEQTTIEED. The deaths, of two tramcar conductors in ■Wellington recently, circumstances tragic enough in themselves, are rendered , more so by the fact that both unfortunate men left widows and' young families unprovided for. Hence, the public is asked to assist in attempts that are be.ng made to help the sufferers. To-morrow alteruoon the Wellington Citv Band will give a benefit performance at the Newtown Park in aid of tnese widows and families. An excel- ' lent (programme of music has been arranged, and it 1s hoped tne public will respond generously to the worthy cause. The Welljigton Iffedertafel is also taking a hand, and will give a popular concert in the Town Hall next Thursday evening. There will bo part songs, solos, and instrumental music, and as popular prices are announced, the promoters have reason to expect that tho hall will be easily filled with people who enjoy alike good music and tne opportunity to do something in the cause oi real charity. (To the Editor "N.Z. Times.") Sir, —X observe there is a movement on foot to assist the widows and orphans of the conductors who recently met their death. Hero is an opportunity for the ■Wellington Orphans' Club to give one of their unique entertainments in a cause that will command the sympathy and support of the whole of the Wellington community. This club, I understand, hae raised large suns of money for the benefit of hospitals in different parts of the country, and surely here is a case where “Orphans" by their great musical and vocal ability could assist the poor little orphans of those men who lost their lives whilst doing their duty. Surely the council would no doubt gratuitously place at the disposal of the Orphans' Club the Town Hall, which I am sure would be [lacked to the doors? I understand the club are having a big function in the Town Hall on August 10th, when visiting Orphan artists from all over New Zealand will be present and give a monster programme to entertain their ladies. Cou.d not arrangements be made to repeat the programme on the Sunday or Monday night for the benefit of the widow and bruhans? I venture to predict that if this could be arranged the entertainment would be packed from floor to ceiling. Here is an opportunity for Secretary Keenan to show his undoubted energy and ability, of organisation and render a service which must appeal Ito the charitable instincts of all classes of the community. Two thousand tickets could at once be put through (he tramwaymen and I venture to state that one would not be leturned. I hone the committee of the club will immediately consider this matter and respond to this appeal with a celerity ■ which wHi earn the warmest appreciations of everybody. —I am, etc., ONE WHO WILL SELL TICKETS.
