LOCAL TOURNAMENTS AND MATCHES.

Owing to last-week’s had weather the progress of tho annual tourneys of the local chess clubs was not so good as usual, a number of games having been postponed. The Wellington Chess Club’s leading tallies to date are as follow:—Barnes and Jolly each 6 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss, and 3 games to play; Fouhy, 6—2; Gyles, sc-r., 6—4; and Carman, 4—3. The ladder match for rung 7 between Fouhy (challenger) and Fell (defender) ended, after a good contest, in favour of the former by ;J games to 1. Contests for rungs 4 and 12 are scheduled to commence this week. '

Tho Working Men’s Club’s annual handicap tourney is jirocecding briskly. Each of the 16 competitors has suffered defeat, although only 4 of tho 15 rounds have been contested. The scores of the leaders are as follow; —Burgess, 4—l; Wild, 3—l; Kostcr, 2—l; Eton, 2—l; Gandy, A-rtJ; Key, 3 —2; Barnes, 2—2; Kelliug. 2--2; Mowtell, 4—3; and Larking. 3—3.

Complete arrangements are being made for tho annua) match with tho Wellington South Chess Club, which is set down for decision on tho club’s social hall next Thursday, commencing at 7.45 p.m. _

In tho Wellington South Club's tournament Armstrong improved his position by winning from Harper, ana the latter fell back another point by losing a previously unfinished game to Purchas. The fixture, Allen v. Welton, which is likely to have a bearing on tho prize-list, was unfinished at H p.m. The leaders now stand as follow: —Purchas, 5i —If; A rmstrong, 3i —1J; Allen 3—l; Harper, 5—3; Welton, 3 —2; Thompson. 3—2; and Belt, 3—3

Negotiations aro in progress for a telegraphic match between tho Wellington East and Masterton Clubs. The Masterton Chess Club, which also contemplates a match with Hamilton, is having a busy season. A handicap tourney is in progress for the silver shield presented by Mr J. Dagg, and a scaled handicap contest for the trophy of the president (Mr G. Jones). It is also proposed to continue tho North v. South Wairarapa fixture, which has proved so enjoyable in the past.
