ROME, July 21. It is semi-officially announced that ©■wing to a report that Turks intended a surprise in the Aegean Sea for Italian torpedo-boats either pursuing Turks or reconnoitring, a flotilla dashed with admirable daring and in perfect order twenty kilometres up the Dardanelles. *
_ They were detected by the search, lights and subjected to a heavy crossfire from the forts on either side; also from rifle and qpickfirer volleys. They advanced until they discovered the Turkish fleet, anchored but fully prepared and protected by a steel cable obstruction.
Consequently the Italians did not attack, but retired undamaged.
