TAXI-CAB DRIVERS
PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. October 10. The Conciliation Council had before it to-ctay the demands made by the taxi-cab drivers, the principal being a flfty-fotvr hours’ week, and a minimum of £3 per week, casual drivers to be paid Is 3d per hour arid overtime at le 6d per hoar. Overtime (or drivers in constant employment at the rate of time and a half. A. long discussion took piaoo in regard to the wages claim. The Commissioner suggested the old.hours and 60s a week, but the employers’ representatives. after consultation, stated that they could not see their way to agree to this owing to the poor .profits received and tlio heavy risks. Ultimately tho parties arrived at an agreement, the principal points being a minimum wage of 60s weekly, improvers or learners 42s weekly, drivers of care on tour to make arrangements with the employers as to overtime, which will bo paid at the rate of lOd hourly, and drivers to join the union within a month of engagement. At the present there arc eight industrial disputes, fourteen compensation cases, and six other matters awaiting to bo dealt with by tho Arbitration Court in tho Canterbury district
