ASSAULT ON HIGH SEAS
COURT HAS NO .'JURISDICTION TO PUNISH. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Ah Wong appeared on remand charged with having on October 2nd, on the high seas between Auckland and Wellington, on the Walkure, assaulted Whang Bon so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated that he wished to oifer.no evidence, as the question of jurisdiction might arise owing to the Walkure hoiug a foreign ship. If accused were handed over to the captain tho latter would bo willing to pay the costs. ‘ His Worship said that If the offence was committed on a foreign ship on the j high seas outside of tho three-mile limit | then the court would have no jurisdiction. ‘
On this ground the accused was discharged.
