A BRITISH HERO’S END.
DEATH IN A WORKHOUSE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received August 4, 3.20 p.m.) ■ LOiSDON, August 3. Dudley Stagpoole, who won the Victoria Cross in New Zealand in 1863, died in the Ware Workhouse. Stagpoole was a drummer in the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment. During the Waikato war, on October 2nd, 1863, with Ensign J. T. Down, he roamed a wounded soldier, carrying him under heavy > lire, from a spot close to the bush, which was full of Maoris. Ho had previously distinguished himself by saving the nves of wounded mem on September 25th, 1863, while himself suffering from two wounds in the head.
