TAHITI
THE GERMAN DEMAND AN AUSTRALIAN OBJECTION. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. SYDNEY, August 4. The “ Sydney Morning Herald ” says the suggested cession of Tahiti to Germany ought to call forth an immediate protest from Australia and Now Zealand. “It is unfortunate.” says the “Herald,” “that Mr Fisher and Sir Joseph Ward are absent, for joint representations should be immediately made in such terms as to leave no possibility of mistake as to the feeling of Australia in tho matter. Any intrusion of Germany in the Pacifis would bo bitterly resented, because it would mean an over-threatening menace at our door.” The paper adds: “ The possession of a Pacific island is nothing to boast of. Those wanting it can only desire it as a point of departure for a much more far-reaching attempt at aggression.”
