Some vessels ■which were unable to unload at London have been ordered to Antwerp. The foreign unions have been instructed to boycott them. Twenty thousand men, including GOOD lightermen, are on strike on the Thames. A CONFERENCE ARRANGED. ARE DOCKERS STEVEDORES? LONDON, August 3. The Chamber of Commerce has arranged a conference, at which both, masters and men have agreed that Sir A. K. Rollit shall be arbitrator, in order to decide whether docket's’ work is stevedores’ work, and, consequently, whether dockers are entitled to be paid at the rate of eightpence a day. Sir Albert Kaye Rollit has boen. described as a “progressive and independent Conservative. ” Ho is sixty-nine years of age, and has had a distinguished career as scholar, lawyer, political economist and also in commerce. Ho is a member of the firm of Bailey and J>ctham, steamship owners, a director of the National Telephone Company, and president of the Municipal Corporations Association. He has filled many other important positions and has been decorated by the British and several foreign Governments. CLYDE SHIPBUILDERS DEMAND FOR INCREASED WAGES. LONDON,' August 3. The men of nineteen trades connected with the Clyde shipbuilding and engineering industries are demanding an additibnal shilling a week in some cases and a corresponding advance in piecework rates in others. QUEENSLAND STRIKE RIOTERS SENT TO GAOL. BRISBANE, August 4. The nine m’on arrested in connection with the Childers riot have each been sentenced to three mouths’ imprisonment on charges of intimidation. The police visited tho Childers strikers’ camp, and arrested sixteen more men. ■ Unionists at Mackay induced the crew of the steamer Trinawar to leave the vessel because she towed a lighter loaded with non-union sugar. At Townsvalle the unionists induced a number of free labourers proceeding to Cairns to join the strike. Twelve strikers have boen committed for trial at Bundaberg on charges of unlawful assembly. A STRIKE IN CAIRO . TRAMWAY MEN GO OUT. FIERCE CONFLICT WITH THE •POLICE. CAIRO, August 3. A tramway strike in this city led to serious riots. ‘ . The police relentlessly sabred the rioters, who replied with stones and some revolvers. Thirty persons were injured, including several police. Several cars were wrecked. HOBART CARTERS’ STRIKE ARRANGEMENT ARRIVED AT. HOBART, August 4. The carters’ strike has ended. The men have accepted the terms offered by the employers, which provide for increases, but not so large as the union had demanded.
