CHARITABLE AID COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the charitable aid committee of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, Mr J. W. McEwan presiding There -were a’eo nrc-‘--ent: —Messrs I). Eobcrtson, "W. Galloway, D. McLaren. M.P., ,T. Smith, Eev. VT. A. and Miss Richmond. One applicant for relief was a man who had fought in .South Africa with the Eighth contingent, and had, after the war, lost the sight of his eyes in a mining accident. The man had a distinct aversion to going into anv home, and he asked the committee whether they would provide him with an cigan cr gramophone for the purpose of playing in the streets. Failing that, he thought that if he could get enough money to start him in a hawking business he could easily make a livelihood. Mr Kobortson mid that the. committee did not exist for the purpose of providing gramophones or organs. This statement considerably annoyed the
applicant, who said that ho did not coma before the mooting to be insulted. However, the man was eventually persuaded to give the Benevolent Homo a trial. , Several other applications for relief were granted. ! '
