BREACH OF AWARD
PAYMENT FOE TIME LOST IN TRAVELLING. The Inspector o£ Awards (Mr E. A. Holland) nroceeded against Meyer and Illingworth in. the Magistrate's I Court yesterday for a .£lO penalty for a breach ol the Wellington building trades labourers’ award in failing to pay _ workmen for time occupied in travelling to and.from work-in a suburban area. Mr T. S. Weston, who appeared for defendant's, stated that they had a con. tract at Karori, and under the award they had to pay the men for time occupied in travelling to work.- The secretary of the union, in ■ response to inquiries, stated that the men should be paid an hour a day for time lost in travelling. Owing to a mistake made in (he office this had been taken as an hour a week. : When the mistake was discovered it was at once rectified. Council suggested that only a nominal penalty should be imposed. After hearing Mr Holland his Worship said the fault lay in the delay in paying. He would accept the statement that a mistake had been made and a small fine would meet the case. Defendants were fined 10s.
