FALSE PRETENCES
YOUNG MAN GETS CHEAT LODGING AND THREE MONTHS’ IMPEI6ON- - MENT. : Albert Ernest Kearns,, a youhS ,inan, was, charged before Air AV. G. KiddeU, S.M.. in the Magistrate s Court yesterday with having, on July 6th,. obtained board from Nellie Parish by means ot a false pretence and with intent to defraud. ■ Ho was further charged with having obtained board from Margaret Peters under similar circumstances. Chief-Dctcctive Broberg stated that accused went to Parish's and’ asked 101 board lie represented that he was cod nected with the “ Tribune;; newspaper, of Hastings, and was in Wellington on business for the paper.' On the strength of this story he was given .board.. Ho then stated that he had , eight friends coming down from Hastings, and ieouested that accommodation be arranged for them. The keeper of the boardinghouse went to the trouble and expense of arranging board for these friends, who, however, failed to materialise. Kearns then went to Peters’s, where he told a similar tale, witli the difference that in this instance the number ot “friends” had diminished to three. There wore, three convictions tor talse pretences against the accused. Kearns pleaded guilty, and on the first charge was sentenced to one month s imprisonment, and on. the second to three months, the sentences to he concurrent. Accused was further charged that on May IXth at Naoier, having obtained requiring him to account lor it to M illiam Whitcoolc, ho fraudulently omitted to do so, thereby committing theft.. On the Duplication of Chief-Detcctivo Broberg he was remanded to appear al Napier bn August 4th:
