THE HEARING CONTINUED CONTENTIONS OF COUNSEL FOR THE DEFENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association Copyright. (Received July 11, 9-30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 11. Tho hearing of the case in which the Coal Vend is charged with being a combination in restraint of trade was continued in the High Court of Australia to-day. Mr Knox, senior counsel for the defendant colliery proprietors, continued his address. Ho occupied tho whole of the day’s sitting, and had not concluded when the comt adjourned- He as&ertod that from 1850 to the present time the Newcastle colliery proprietors had realised higher prices in foreign markets tlian in tho inter-Stato trade. Ho argued that, when coming to an agreement with tho shipping companies, the oolli-ery proprietors ha/d in mind the general preservation of tho industry and uniform selling and helving rates. Ho also stated that some sliipping companies had interests in certain collieries, and it was assumed that if no .arrangements wore entered into they would favour their own collieries in regard to tho carriage of coal.
