NEW ZEALAND’S MEAT MARKET
The Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with tho High Commissioner’s Office, states the Hon. T. Mackenzie, is studying all aspects of the Continental market with a view to securing openings for our meat and other products. It is inevitable that an increased trade in food supplies must in the near future take place among the Continental markets, which up to the present have debarred by restrictive tariffs and other methods the food products from New Zealand and other countries entering their markets. In this connection means are_ being adopted to secure aa far as possible for New Zea-
land terms equal to those granted other exporting countries. Asked if he had any information regarding the operations of American meat trust representatives in New Zealand, the Minister of Agriculture states that tho Government is aware that the Chicago meat packers have secured works in tho Argentine. The trust’s position and operations in that country are being carefully watched by the department with a view to estimating the influence tho trust may exercise on competition from South America on the world’s markets. No information, except that which has appeared in the daily press, has reached the department as to the trust having acquired interests in Sydney.
