SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA

BAST WIN FOR PEARCE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 29. b p.m.) SYDNEY, May 28. The sculling race between Harry Pearce and S. Hagney for the championship of Australia and JBIOO a-side, took place this afternoon on the Parramatta river. The weather was beautifully fine, and the water smooth, while the prospect of seeing a hard race attracted a big attendance of spectators. These, however. . were disappointed, as tho contest proved little more than a procession. . Hagney got the best of tho start, and at a hundred yards was showing in front. For tho first half mile ho kept Pearce moving, but after that the champion was not troubled.- He was two lengths to the good at the mile post, and this was increased to six lengths in .the next mile. From that out Pearce went right away, paddling home twenty lengths in front of Hagney, who tired badly at the finish. The winner rowed grandly throughout. Time. 21min 22fcsec. fvidently the title was against the scullers, as the time is very slow. The record for the course, {3. miles and 330 yards) is held bv Chris. Nielsen, who on September 17th, 1892,- rowed the distance in 17mm 465 see. Dick Arnst’s time against Webb in 1903 on the Wanganui river (3 miles and 440 yards) was 19min 52sec. 1
