In an interview with a “ Morning Tost ” representative before be left for Cannes, Mr Joseph Chamberlain sard that the Tariff Reformers had not done so well at the recent elections as he had .expected, but there had been on enormous increase of votes oast for them.
They had, he said, Bared the worst where the local leaders were most vacillating and timid. Now the proposals for food duties must be explained boldly and straightforwardly.
‘ ‘ The Imperial side is the stronger side of Tariff. . Reform,” he declared, “ and the working classes are Imperialists. Land taxes are popular in. the North of England and Scotland, and the Unionist sert-back there showed the necessity of a progressive land policy, particularly in the direction of encouraging co-operation. “ 11711110 the Liberal tendency is towards a single Chamber, the Unionists must aim at strengthening the House of Lords by a reform of its Constitution.’’ Mk Chamberlain added that Mr Asquith “will find the Irishman a hard taskmaster.” FREE TRADE FIGHTING FUND.
The “Daily Chronicle” Free Trade Fighting Fund now amounts to nearly £3OOO.
