Woodville J.C.—Feb. 23, 24, WELLINGTON RACING CLUB The following handicaps have been declared by Mr J. H. Pollock: TRENTHAiT WELTER HANDICAP, Of 100 eovs; one mile.

NOTES AND COMMENTS [By " Augub."] Nightmare, full-sister to Polyca'ste, gave a very creditable display over hurdles at Pahiatua. yesterday, and being in such capable hands as J. Cameron's, the mare should do well. Purukau credited Mr W. C. Tally, the popular Wairarapa sport, with a win' at Pahiatua yesterday, and paid a nice dividend. The black gelding was always in a good position, and won decisively. Jjongmer has been scratched for all engagements at the forthcoming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. * The Canterbury-trained Prim has been withdrawn from the Wellington Cup. J. Cameron, the Feilding trainer, is getting a useful team together in Blend, Nightmare, Arcadia, and a Mauser gelding .from Letheirin's dam. Some wins 6hould he secured by this one-time successful cross-country rider, who has deserted the pigskin for the training track. Aberration returned his supporters a substantial dividend in the final race at uiiatua yesterday." This comes as a surprise, seeing that he won. the last event on the previous day and paid a very short price. At a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Olub, tho fallowing transfers were approved:—H. Gaisford to B. Christie, b f by Stepniak—Royal Plumes; to J. Buckley, blk f Madfrura, by Stepniak—Madder, 2-yeairs, to J. McCombe; b c TawhaH, by Menschikoff— Armilla, 3-years. W. Robertson to W. Bumten, ch c Palette by Pallas—BeaJley, 3-years. Gutts is expected at Trenfiam shortly with Husbandman, Broadsword, and Saxifrage, who will join the rest of Sir G. Clifford's team for the Wellington fixture. Acceptances for the Wellington Cup and Telegraph Handicap close with Mr .v'hyte at 9 o'clock to-night. Mi-' G. P. Donnelly's hurdler Gold Seal, who was taken to England last year, acquitted himself well in his exercise work, but according to advices received recently there are doubts as- to his being a competitor in the ne *t Liverpool Grand National in March next. • . Judging from the following, the "Times", is apparently not the only paper at times submitted to embarrassing inquiries by some of its subscribers. Writing to a Northern Elvers exchange, a correspondent signing himself Disputants" (O.K. Mines), asks:—'At the races here on the 23rd inst., one sport took-a wager of 20 sheets of hark to one about a', horse, and he won. Now, should the lo«er- deliver.the bark to the winner, or should the latter go to the bush himself to where the bark is stacked and take delivery himself?" The editor of the journal referred to was evidently equal to . the occasion, as he replied : "There -being no 'Tattersall 6 at 0.K., the bark should be kept in the loser's back yard ready for delivery on application. In future it should be bark up, or no bet."PAHIATUA KACING CLUB SECOND DAY. SPLASH'/WINS PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. [By " Augur."] PAHIATUA, January 13. The annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club was brought to a conclusion to-day. The weather was fine, and consequently there was a larger 'attendance than oni'the opening day. The fields in several of the events were of small dimensions, but notwithstanding this omission some interesting racing took place, testifying that the club's handicapper, Mr J. E.
