. -■« ~ ■ • rALMERSTON NOTES. FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. . PALMERSTON, January 13. Over £20,000 worth of wool was carried by the Fbxton-Sandon tram last moivth. For some time past the Manawatu Land Drainage Board has been troubled with overflowing water on properties near the Awopuni racecourse. The cause has now. boon discovered to he the thoughtlessness of. settlers themselves, who had blocked the M.a«Kaone stream by running a number of barbed wire strands across it between the piers of the racing club'sjirivato: railWay bridge and Mr AV. Strang's bridge, evidently to prevent stock passing underneath the" bridges. The engineer found no fewer than twentytetrauds acroiss the stream in one place. 'and these lad caught all the available driftwood and-formbd a dam., Tho Foxton-Sandou _ tram had -a very narrow escape this week through 'tlie carelessness of'a: settler in allowing his stock on the roadway. . On going round a corner the tram driver saw five calves reclining on tne Tails, and before he could pull up no had turned three of -tliem into ,ve-al. He continued his journey, but on returning to the ! spot later all traces of the disaster had beon, removed by the loirnor, who still carefully conceals his identity. The (Controlling authority has decided to rigorously enforce the impounding by-laws in future.
