FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS. MASTERTON AND DISTRICT. January 12. Tho Eketahuna Mounted Rifles will go into camp on Thursday. The Masterton County Council has decided to observe Thursday as the- halfholiday in tho county. The Pahiatua County Council has increased the salary of ite clerk (Mr G. Moore) by «£25 per annum. Mr S. Wood?, of Pahiatua, has offered to establish wool-classing classes in Pahiatua, if sufficient support is forthcoming,' As far as Mastcrton is concerned there has been no shrinkage in the passenger traffic since the new fares came into operation. Councillor Miller will represent the Mastortoii County Council at the election of a member of the Wellington. Harbour Board on February 11 Ui next. Tho Eketahuna County Council has extended the time for the enforcement of the penalty for the non-payment of rates from January 29th to February 28th, Tho Mastcrton Cricket Association's fixtures will be resumed to-morrow after the holidays, when Carlton will play Rivals, and W.F.C.A. will meet Carterton. . Tho residents of Scarborough will tender a farewell social to Mr J. H. Malcolm, a popular member of the oomnvunity, who is leaving the district shortly. A severe form of smut is making its in a number of wlmat crops in the Wairarapa. Some of the crops about tlie Tower Valley and several m tho Mastcrton district are badly affected. Tho following wcie the leading scores in. the first trophy competition held by tho Mauricevill© Rifle Club on Saturday last;—Rifleman A. M. Rose 90, Rifleman H. N. Wilton S 9, Rifleman D. H. Rutherfurid 87, Rifleman C.. Bluett 85, Captain Jl. F, Wilton 81. Another competition will be held on Saturday next. The Tararua Rifle Club held a competition on Saturday last for Mr F. H. Dowdell's trophy, the beet scores being as follow;—li. R. Keene (handicap 3) 54, J. Petersen (scratch) 53, R. Thomason. (2) 52, 0. A. Olsen (2) 51, T. Daysh (7) 49. .Tho club will be represented by the. following in a match against the Alfredton .Club; J. Petersen; W. Mason, R. Thomiascn, O. A. Olsen, H. R. Keene, T. Daysh, 31. Ticehurst, B, Alberthsen, and C. Huckstcp. Noxious weeds are flourishing in the Eketahuna district, and both _ the Borough Council and County Council are becoming anxious in the matter. It was stated at the meeting of the Eketahuna County Council .on Saturday last that ragwort and Californian thistle were being allowed to seed, and with the first strong wind this seed would be spread over a wide area. Councillors complained that there was no inspector to < enforce the provisions of tho Noxious Weeds Act. It was agreed that force would have to be brought to bear to compel settlers to clear their properties of noxious weeds, and it was resolved to write, to the Agricultural Department asking that an official be, sent to the district to enforce the Noxious Weeds Act in cases where settlers failed to eradicate weeds.
