ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL

OEDINABY MEETING. The Onslow Borough Council met last evening'. . Present—The Mayor (Mr J. G. Harkness), and Councillors B. Lynneberg, P. Kiernan, A. Carver, G. W. Darvall, I>. A. Bannister, C. Aplin, jun., E. S. Stafford, and W. B. Plimmer. ' It was decided to write to the City Council, drawing attention to the defective lighting of certain parts of the borough served by the city. It was pointed out that three or four lamps at Ngaio had been out for more than a week. ■ The report of . the borough engineer stated that 328 cubic yards of metal had been distributed since he had last reported. . A tracing had been sent to the city’s electrical lighting department showing the position of the new lights to be erected in Xiaiwarra. There were to be twelve in all, ten of which would ■ replace the existing gas lamps. He had interviewed the secretary of the_ Gas Company, who had stated all the company required was a month’s notice when the council desired to cancel the agreement. The electric lighting ucpartment could not start the work until next month owing to the shortage of poles. A resolution was carried to the effect that the attention of certain ratepayers should be again drawn to the necessity of preventing their drainage running on to the borough roads. In tho event of default it is proposed to bring a test case to court to eee whether the by-law is sufficient to empower the council to make ratepayers conform to it. The engineer was instructed to furnish a report in regard to the fencing and replanting of the catchment area. The Mayor was appointed the council’s delegate to attend the annual conference to, fix the statutory half-holiday; and Councillor Plimmer to attend the conference for the selection of a member to sit on the Wellington Harbour Board.
