A NOTE OF SATISFACTION

•'" (To the Editor "N.Z. Times.") Sir,—Permit me. to' express rny pleasure at tho emphatic rejection by tho ratepayers of the proposal to raise £27,500 for workers', homes. The idea of acquiring land for workers' homes, to say nothing of the utter inadequacy of tho system to restore the land to the people, is so utterly indefensible that I can only marvel why any bearded man Should support it- In this particular instance- no proposal whatever was submitted +o the ratepayers beyond tho demand for a'blank cheque for £27,500. One would think after all the talk there has been before the . public that the Mayor . and those of the councillors who profess to believe in municipal housing would have placed a matured plan before the public. Tho real explanation 'is that the person does not exist who can mature a plan. However, now that the ratepayers have done the proper thing with the ridiculous shibboleth, It would be interesting to learn what will bo the next nostrum to stave off the taxation of land-values. When Labour make 3 up its mind to rely no longer on protective duties and Arbitration Acts but to demand equal rights to land, wo shall reach the end of the unemployed difficulty, but not till then. —I am, etc., . P. J. O'REGAN. , February, loth. : .
