Tho captain of the frigate Paesino was buried alive in the ruins. All the warships, lying at Naples have been ordered to proceed to Messina with relief for the stricken city. King Victor Emmanuel is also proceeding to tho scene of the disaster. Extensive damage was also don© in other towns, where the residents are now encamping in the fields. Among the places most seriously affected were Bagnara, a town of about 8000. inhabitants, in the province of Calabria, at tho southern extremity of Italy; Giora, a village in the province of Aquila of about 2500 inhabitants; and Palma, a large modern town near the south-west corner of Sicily, whoso inhabitants number over 14,000.
