TIDAL WAVE

IMPOSSIBLE TO' RESCUE THE INJURED. EMBEDDED IN MUD. ROME, December 29. After the earthquake a tidal wave overran most of Messina, leaving a layer of mud everywhere. Tho work of rescue was thus rendered very difficult, apd it was often impossible to extricate the injured. To add to the terror of the disaster, fires occurred owing to explosions of gas consequent upon breakage of the mains. Two suburbs of Messina, Foro and Ganzini, have disappeared. Violent shocks occurred between half-past 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning at Glatanza-ro, capital of the province of that name, and a city of about 63,000 inhabitants, and Reggio di Calavria, a city of 45,000, situated on the Strait of Messina.
