Terrible earthquakes, causing great loss of life, have occurred in Southern Italy and Sicily, The shock was of very long duration, and of the most frightful intensity. It is feared that a repetition of the great disaster of ISOS may take place. Messina, an important seaport at the north-eastern end of Sicily, was almost completely overwhelmed. Two-thirds of the city were altogether destroyed. , It is reported that thousands of people were killed in the disaster.
