NOTES BY "ADVANCE.” '

Sir George Clifford's horses Husbandman, Clanchattan, Sister Anne and i)e AVitte, who competed at the Manawatu 'meeting, returned south last nignt. Sister Anne will probably return m company with Stratagem to compete at tne Feilding Faster meeting. - All doubts as to the genuineness of Dan Patch's recentJy-estabhsned mjie record of 2min llsec were dispelled on the Kichmonu racecourse on March 31st, when he paced a mile in 2min lOsec. Most careful and elaborate preparations were made. . The track was put in its very best order, measured and roped off. and a galloping horse assisted Australia's champion racer. Thi? Melbourne “Argus" repons that the vices of Mr Walter Heath, of Messrs Gaunt and Co., Melbourne, were secured to record each quarter of the mile, and take the time for the entire journey. In addition to Hr Heath, numerous expert timekeepers put their chronometers on Dan Patch, and agreed with Mr Heath’s verdict of 2min lOsec. In one of the working preliminary tests in which Dan Patch was indulged he paced a mil© on the extreme outside of the track in 2min 12seo, covering the last quarter of •the mile in Dan Patch was driven bv L. Robertson, who is retained by the Allendale Stock Farm at Mentone, owned by Tye Brothers. The se©* tipns of the mile paced by Dan Patch were run as follow:—First quarter, 32 seo; second quarter, SOfsec; third quarter, 33sec; fourth and last quarter, sec. Dan Patch and his driver were accorded a great reception when the time was announced. Dan Patch was bred in New Zealand,..and his sire, Rothschild, is also the sire of Sal Tasker and many other brilliant performers on the trotting track; The New Zealand horses Melodeon and Waipuna were among, the unplaced division in the Rosehill Cup, won by Maranui. \

The "Svdney Morning Herald" thus refers to Elevation’s first appearance at Bandwiok on Thursday morning of last week:—The middle grass track was in use, and in good order. Interesting features of the morning were the presence of the New Zealand colt Elevation and an opportunity to witness a gallop by the English horse Bright Steel, who, in company with his imported stable mate Snowy River, rattled over six furlongs in Imin 17sec. early in the morning, when the* dew was heaviest, t Elevation was restricted to pacing work and a moderate spurt. from the three-furlongs post home. _ This_ son of San Francisco- is a perfectly-form-ed chestnut, low of stature, but is powerfully built for his weight, and is exceptionally good about the' quarters.
