HALF-MILE RECORD. BEATEN BY TWO SWIMMERS. - PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, February 21. At tho Waitemata Swimming Chih't carnival to-night M. B. Champion lower, ed tho New Zealand record for half a mil© by 24 1-Ssec, his time being 13min 2soc. J. Grant, who swam second to him, also beat the previous record by 2sec, his time being 13min 24 l-ssoc. Champion appeared to be able to reduce the time had he been forced. R. Carill is credited with swimming half a mile in Umin Bsec at Wanganui it February, 1902. The late B. B, Kiomaii swam half a mile in Uxnin 2i-5 see at Belfast, Ireland, in 1905. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS, The last New Zealand swimming championships were held at Nelson in February, 1906. There was no New Zen* land championship meeting last year on account of tho Australasian meeting at Christchurch. The championship meet* iug this year will be hold at Napier at the end of March. The first race far tho cup, which - was given by tho president, jjv Chappie, <o the Wellington Swimming Club, took place at To Aro Bathe yesterday evening. 'The competition is decided on the results of three races of 50, 100, and 150 yards respectively, first place to count five xxnnts, second three, and third one. Tho cup has to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals.

The 50y<U race was strum Inst night in four heats. The first heat provided a good race, Aston just winning by a touch from L. Bridge, who gained eocond place with about a toot to ©pare from Morpeth. In the second heat Ashford anu Wine started ofi the same mark and swam neck mid neck tho whole way. Ashford 1 jiwt managing to win by a touch. It. Bvenfon was a yard away third. The thud heat was one of beet uuyd races' seen at the baths this year, all the contestants being close together the whole wav. Croll won by a touch; There were only two starters, in tho fourth heat. The final proved a good thing for Aston, who won with about tnree yards to spare from L. Bridge.
