MISS MURCUTT'S LECTURE. The fifth of the series of lectures delivered by Mis* A. L. A. Murcutt, under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance, was given in the concert haU of the Town Hall last night, the subject being “Canada and the Canadians. ' The Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., occupied the chair. Miss Murcutt, in her opening remarks, said it should be borne in mind that Canada was forty times as larger a* England, AVales and Scotland combined. It had a population of only sis millions—about as much as in tha city of London. The educational system was very similar to that prevailing in the United States. The Canadian* had State schools, education was free, and the people place just as much valuo on education as the inhabitants of tho United States, Canada possessed splendid agricultural schools and experimental farms, and gave 640 acres of land free to any immigrant, as well as assistance in cultivating and improving tho holding. The year the JCanadion-Pacifia railway was opened there were 33,000 homesteads taken up, and the Transcontinental railway, now being constructed, was going to open up a very considerable portion of the Great NorthWest. In New Zealand one required capital to take up land, but in Canada opportunities were afforded and no capital was required. Canada was one of the most sober countries in the world. Tho lecture concluded with an appeal in favour of prohibition in New Zealand, The Rev. J. Dawson appealed for a large attendance this evening, when Miss Murcutt's fined lecture will be delivered. He moved a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Murcutt and the chairman. The vote was carried by acclamation. Miss Murcutt will give her final leo tore this evening.
