FRIDAY, NOVEMBER. 3. i (Bcicrc Dr .McArthur. S.M.) For drunkenness five first-offenders were convicted. Three were discharged, two fined 3s and discharged, John Casey, who was dealt witli leniently on a similar charge on the previous day, was again convicted of drunkenness, and fined 40s, or in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. William Barker was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, and being found by night _ unlawfully on the premises of Dr Napier McLean. Accused asked to be dealt with summarily. Ho was convicted, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. SLY GROG-SELLING. Two charges of selling liquor on Sunday, October 29'-h without a license to do so were proffered against W illiam Kvans, steward of the s.s. Stonnbird. In one case, Joseph Edwards, and in tho second Samuel Gliddon (police probationers), were named as the persons to whom tho liquor was supplied. Air AVili'ord said defendant did not ask tho two men to drink. They came to him on his vessel, and asked for it. “To save a life,” one of them put it. Mr Wilford contended that it was not fair that men whom there was nothing to show were policemen should thus have induced defendant to break tho law. Tho second charge was withdrawn by tho Sub-Inspector, though he pointed out the offence had been committed within an hour of the other one. Defendant had a good character. Tho evidence was that accused, who pleaded not guilty, owed plaintiff £l4 for goods bought. He presented a cheque for £l6, and received £2 change. Tho cheque was returned by tho bank marked “no account.” Accused was about to leave for tho north when arrested. Mr Wilford, who appeared for accused. said ho had intended to obtain the money to meet tho cheque from Dannevirke, when ho was arrested. Accused was sent to gaol for three months with hard labour. MISCELLANEOUS. Stella Taylor was sent to prison for six months with hard labour for vagrancy. James Joseph Garrity was remanded for a weak on four charges of having received emus of money from W. Hinton, at Alfredton, and fraudulently converting same to his own use. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was allowed bail in his own and two other sureties of £SO each. Evidence in a charge against a young man named AVilliam George Conway of an assault upon a little hoy named Arthur Evans was hoard hy tho Alagistrate in camera. The accused, who was represented by Air Nielsen, pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed in one surety of £SO.
