CHRISTCHURCH. November 3. The secretary of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day received a telegram from Mr G. Hogben, Inspector General of Schools, stating that a grant of JI3OOO had been provided for buildings required for technical classes conducted by the Christchurch Technical Classes Association, subject to the full constitution of the association by the election of managers, and to the Minister’s approval of the plans. The secretary of the Royal Humane Society has received application for an award on behalf of Mr W. T. Riddock, of Belfast, who on the afternoon of September 7th, 1905, lescued Myrtle Bennington from drowning at Sumner. The girl was playing on the sand between Sumner jetty and Cave Rock, when she fell into the channel of the river and was carried away. Mr Riddock, who was standing on the jetty, jumped into the water, reached the girl and held her up until they were drawn to shore. There was a very strong current running out at the time, and Mr Riddock, who was not a strong swimmer, and who was hampered by his clothes, incurred great risk in going to the girl’s assistance. DUNEDIN, November 3. Two seamen on the Loch Garve were to-day each fined 30a and costs for refusing to go to work. Accused pleaded guilty. Counsel said the men had refus. ed to go to work because of the manner in which they had been treated by tho officers. Albert Henry Lovelock, who had been arrested at Invercargill, pleaded guilty to-day to forging and uttering a cheque for A'B 10s, and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. The Otago Trades and Labour Council has passed the following resolution with respect to the proposal of the Premier Vo hold a “Labour Parliament ”: —That no conference wall be satisfactory unless representatives of the workers are equal to the combined representatives of employers and farmers, and that other trade councils be asked to refuse to take part in the conference unless on the basis of equal representation.
