The Council resumed at 7.30. CRIMINAL COD It. 'i'iio Criminal Code Act Amendment Bill was further considered in committee. The Hon Mr Rigg’s amendment to destroy tiio principle of the hill was lost by 18 votes to 2. Those who voted for it were the Hon Messrs Bigg and Jen ki noon. Tho Hon Air Bigg then moved a new clause to tho effect that notwithstanding anything in tho hill, it shall ho a lawful 'excuse that defamatory words spoken as comment on a subject of public interest in good faith during a. discussion for tho public interest or benefit shall bo fair comment. Tho lion Mr Pitt would not accept tho amendment. A suggestion was made that tho new clause should bo printed so that members could study it, whereupon tho Hon Mr Bigg moved to report progress.— Lost by 1G votes to -I. The proposed now clauso was lost by 18 votes to 2. Tho two wore the Hon Messrs Bigg and Bolt. Tho hill was then reported without amendment', and read a third time on the voices. WORKERS’ DWELLINGS. Tho Workers’ Dwellings Bill was put through committee and read a third time on tho voices. Tho Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
