HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25. Tho House met at 2.30 p.m. NEW BELLS. The Maori Land Claims and Law Adjustment and the Town Districts Act Amendment Bills were introduced by ■Governor’s message and read a first time. INDUSTRIAL LAWS. The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Acts Compilation Bill passed its final stages, PROPERTY LAW. The amendments made by the committee in the Property Law Bill were agreed to by 42 votes to 21, and tlio bill passed. Objection was raised to the hill being placed on the statute-book this session, as very few members understood it. EDUCATION ACT AMENDMENT. The Education Act Amendment Bill was further considered in committee. It was agreed that tho act shall'come into force on January Ist, 190 G; that a teacher appointed before tho coming into operation of the act shall not, so long as ho remains in the came position, receive a salary lower than ho would have been entitled to under the act of 1904. On tho motion of Mr Wood, it was resolved that a-member of an tion Board should oeaso to bo a member of the Board on his ceasing to reside in the district. Mr Buddo moved to amend the schedule by providing that at least one out of tho first two (instead of throe) assistants in any school must ho a woman. —Lost on'the voices. Mr J. Allen moved that any school with over forty in average attendance shall have a mistress. Lost by 34 votes to 30. , . . , Tho hill was reported with amendments and passed. Air Arnold (on behalf of Mr Sidey) •moved to recommit tho bill, in order to provide that tho selection of teachers shall he left in tho hands of commitfoes instead of Education Boards, as provided in tho bill.—Carried by 40 votes to 28. _ The House adjourned at 0.30 p.m.
