DEATH OF JULIAN RALPH.

(Received January 22, 4.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 21. Tho death is announced of Mr Julian Ralph, tho New York correspondent of tho “Daily Mail.”

Tho deceased was for many years in tho front rank of American newspaper men. Of late his name has been brought prominently before_ tb.o_ British Xiuhlio by articles in English journals and two or three books ho wrote on tho war in South Africa. But it was in tho United States that his best work Was done. Thirty years ago or more ono night Julian Ralph walked into tho oflico of the “Chicago Times-Hornld” and asked for given to him. In time his work attracted attention in Now York, and ho accepted au offer to join the “Daily Graphic” in that city. Shortly afterwards—in 1875—h0 went over to tho “Sun,” then a powerful political force, and remained cm that paper for twenty years. In that time Air Ralph built up a reputation as ono of tho brightest writers on tho American press. In 1896 hn joined tho “New. York Journal.” On tho outbreak of tho Boor war ho was appointed correspondent with Lord Methuen's fo-rco for the London “Daily Mail.” Air Ralph’s death has occurred in Ins fiftieth year. His publications include —“Tne Sun’s Gorman _ Barber, ’ “Chicago and the- World’s Fair,” “People Wo Pass,” “Alono in China,” “Dixie,” “An Angel in a Web,” Pretoria,” “At Pretoria,” “ War’s Brighter Side.”
