THE NEW LOANS
(Received January 22, 4.5-1 p.m.) LONDON, January 21;
Tho thirty-five million loan arranged by Mr Chamberlain was a compromise between -forty millions proposed by tho Rand financiers and Mr Chamberlain s suggestion of thirty millions. Tnis leaves twelve millions for now public works.
Wth reference to the war loan, a meeting representative of tho groar mining houses, with tho exception of the J. B. Robinson Company, suggested a contribution of thirty millions. rv conference of traders, merchants and miners of the Rand afterwards ratified this by seventy-four votes to four. (Received January 23, 0.51 a.m.) CAPETOWN, January 22. Mr -Chamberlain has announced that tho thirty million war loan was intended for tho relief of Britain’s debt. The immediate relief, to the revenue, ho said, would be slight, if any. General Louis Botha. Air O. "V' an Hulstyn. Sir G. Farrar and Sir Percy Fitzpatrick will probably ho nominated to the Transvaal Legislative Council, which is to meet in May. Its sittings will be open to the public.
