FOOTBALL.
WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON. On tho Athletic Park this afternoon tho Wairarapa and Wellington Rugby Union representative teams will be pitted against each other in the return game of tho annual homc-and-home matches. The first game wag won by Wellington by three points.
THE BATTALION TOURNAMENT. Tho first round of the Battalion football tournament will probably bo played at Miramar on the 30th Tho drawing is as follows: —Cycle Corps v. Civil Service, Guards v. Zcalandias, Highland Rifles v. Kelburno Rifles, College Rifles v. Post and Telegraph Rifles, Great interest is being taken in those competitions, in view of the projected visit of the battalion representatives to Christchurch to meet a tearii drawn from tho battalion there.
The majority of the Wairarapa representatives arrived by last evening s late train. They were mot by the officials of tbe Wellington Rugby. Union, and conveyed to the Trocadero, where they will stay during their brief visit. The team will bo the gruosts of the Rugby Union at the Opera House this evening after the match, and to-morrow morning will be shown over the Parliamentary Buildings by Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, M.H.R., member for the Wairarapa. On Monday they will return home.
Mr J. O. Hankins, manager of the Horowhenua representatives that played Manawatu at Palmerston on Wednesday last, writes to contradict tho charges of rough play made against his team. Ho adds: The game was hardly contested by both sides, and there were two accidents on each side, but these were not caused by rough play. The Horowhenua team had a very trying time, the whistle being sounded incessantly against them. A special meeting of the Wellington Referees’ Association will be held at the Cycle Club rooms on Monday evening.
