CARTERTON.
ENCOURAGING VOLUNTEERING.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Monday, 4.30 p.m. jruch indignation is expressed by the South Wairarapa Mounted Rifles at the collection of old clothing which the Colonial War Office has forwarded them as cavalry cloaks. These relics bear the stamp of the Royal Irish Fusiliers. After years of service they were called in, and after slumbering in the British Defence Stores for a few more years they were sent to th© patriotic New Zealand Government, with the egend J “Condemned” printed boldly across the backs. They dozed peaces fully for another decade in Wellington. Some time ago the most moth-eaten ones were sold at public auction, and the re r mainder have been, worked off on Volunteers. The coats look thoroughly disreputable, being mouldy and well venitilated. In some cases where new capes have been sewn on the effect is highly incongruous. The 'garments are unfit, ted for the use of horsemen. Thp War
Office asks 10s apiece for the articles. The Rifles state that they intend to return the venerable collection. Last Friday, at West Taratahi, Arthur Bishop, who has charge »f a sawmill, had a fortunate escape from dea'li. While driving log-laden trucks the horses bolted, and he was thrown senseless so near the tram line that the wheels brushed his clothes. After going some distance, the trucks bounced off the line. Th e horses were severely injured. Bishop is progressing favourably. Dr Millar, who leaves for Scotland next Saturday, was banqueted here, his fr iends presenting him with a handsome case of dissecting instruments. Owing to the bad weather, attendance at the West Taratahi school last week averaged only three. This morning the whole of the lowlying ranges were covered with patches of snow. There was also a slight tall and shower’s of hail in town last evening.
