THE CADET MOVEMENT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Friday, 7 p.m. At a meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club last evening it -was decided to call tenders for the formation of a new course two and three quarter chains wide at Awapuni, the course proper to be one and a quarter chains, and the remainder training tracks. At the Campbell street school yesterday Messrs Warden and Lyons, who ac* companied the school cadets to Christchurch, were presented with a gold albert and a gold mounted pipe respectively, Mr W. Muggfidge was presented with a silver match box and cigarette-holder in recognition of his work in instructing the ambulance class at the school. Mr F. Lewen, who has been employed for some time past at the_ United Farmers’ Co-operative Association, was presented with a silver sovereign case and purse of sovereigns by his fellow employees. on leaving the establishment. The Racing dub has given a special prize of £3 3s to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association for ■ the thoroughbred horse class. At a meeting representative of the local friendly societies held last evening it was decided to hold a meeting at which several questions affecting the welfare of the lodges could bo discussed. A letter has been received by Mr G. Grant, late president of the Youths’ Institute, from the Defence Department inquiring if the committee of the institute is still desirous of forming a cadet corps, and, if so, if it would forward an application and particulars to the officer commanding the Wellington district. The Youths’ Institute is now defunct, and the letter has been forwarded to the secretary of the citizens’ committee, who wrote a- few days ago asking if the Department would accept the sendees of a cadet corps formed from boys who have left school. The Manawatu Golf Club will send a team to Wanganui to-morrow. The ladies’ match arranged for (he same date has fallen through. The team avr.i.ab’.c was not particularly strong, as the majority of the players were unable to get away.
