WANGANUI.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Friday, 6.10 p.m. Dr Smyth, Inspector of the Wanganui Education Board, is interesting himself in arranging what are known as summer classes for teachers, such as are held in America, Great Britain and on the Continent. At these classes lectures are delivered on leading topics of the dav. the object being to enable teachers to keep thoroughly abreast of the times. Professor Maclaurin delivered thp first of a series of winter lectures to-night. The Professor discussed “Comets.’ At the conclusion of the lecture a meeting was held for the purpose of inaugurating an association of those interested in astronomy, with the object of procuring a telescope and observatory. Mr Thomas Nicholas, late of Wanganui,, has taken the Egmont Hotel, Hawofa, from Mr Kelly, and enters into possession at once. The annual installation meeting of St. Andrew’s Lodge was held last evening, for the purpose of installing Bro D. McFarlan© as W.M. There was a large and representative attendance, including R.W. Grand Superintendent Bro H. J. Williams, of Wellington, who came up specially for the Death has claimed another old and respected identity in the person of Mr Jonathan Siddle, who passed away this morning at the age of sixty-three years. Deceased was a native of Middleborough, Yorkshire, and arrived in Wellington in the ship Wairoa in 1879. Deceased leaves two sons and two daughters. One of the eldest of the latter, Miss Isabella' Siddles, is in England, the other being Mrs A. W. Wild, of Wanganui. Mr Reuben Siddle*- is occupied in farming pursuits at Taihape, and Mr Matthew Siddle is in Wanganui managing the business in The Avenue.
