PROPOSED NATIONAL MEMORIAL. THE COLONIES TO BE ASKED. TO CONTRIBUTE. LONDON, March 27. The proposal to erect in, front of Buckingham Palace a national memorial to Queen Victoria was endorsed by a great representative meeiting held at the Mansion House. It was decided to appeal for funds throughout the Empire. King Edward wrote to the Lord Mayor promising a subscription of- a thousand guineas. He approved the proposed site and hopeld that a lasting andl worthy memorial of the great Queen would be erected- ; The Rothschilds subscribed two thousand guineas,'and Sir Thomas Liptdn arid Sir John Blundell ’Maple a thousand guineas each. Lord Salisbury and Sir Henry Camp-bell-Bannerman, being-indisposed, were, unable to attend the meeting. j Eloquent eulogies : of the late Queen were pronounced by Messrs A. J. Balfour and J. Chamberlain,, the Duke of Norfolk and Sir William Harcourt. / Mr Chamberlain expressed the hope that, apart from their merely loyal memorials, all the colonies would be associated with the Imperial tribute.
